Infrared Grilling: Facts To Satisfy Your Curiosity
Most people don't know that infrared grilling is a tasty and convenient cooking method that draws on some of the best aspects of outdoor food preparation while avoiding many of its inconveniences and limitations.
Infrared grilling, formerly only available to commercial establishments, is seeing a huge surge in popularity as numerous consumer grills begin to appear in retail stores across the globe. If you're curious about infrared grilling but don't quite understand what all the fuss is about, read on for a few of the highlights.
Typical barbecue grills use convection cooking. That is, they heat the air around the food being cooked until it is hot enough to do so. Though tried and true, this method has many disadvantages.
It is incredibly wasteful, as the heat generated is much greater than that needed to cook the food. Also, anyone who enjoys grilling during the heat of summer knows first-hand that, even if wasted heat and power isn't a concern, the extreme heat is much more acutely felt when combined with the sun's rays.
Furthermore, convection grilling takes time. The air needed to cook the food must be heated to temperatures sufficient to get the job done. Since much of this energy is being wasted anyway, the time needed to accomplish the task of heating the grill is often more than is needed to cook the food itself.
Infrared grilling circumvents many of these issues. Rather than heating all of the air around the food being cooked, infrared grilling focuses the heat onto a single burner. The results incorporate many properties which lead to a superior cooking experience.
First, heat is more evenly distributed. Traditional grills focus larger amounts of heat around a single flame, with the air temperature reducing significantly toward the outer edges. In contrast, the burner distributes heat evenly across the entire surface being cooked, focusing it directly onto the food without the need for a flame. It is also possible to more finely control the cooking temperature of an infrared grill, leading to perfect meals prepared more exactly to one's specifications.
Temperatures on the infrared grill are also much higher. Whereas normal grills top out at around 750 degrees, infrared grills typically extend to around 900. While one consequence of this is that meats and other foods may burn more easily if care isn't taken to avoid it, a benefit is that cooking and preparation times are shorter.
Because infrared grills distribute heat more efficiently and evenly, they are able to accomplish the task of perfectly cooking steaks with less fuel use. As such, those who use infrared grills can expect significantly longer times between the inconvenience of refilling gas or propane tanks.
Infrared grills have vastly modernized and revolutionized the outdoor cooking scene, making it possible to achieve the perfect steak in far less time and using much less fuel. The results are perfect meats well-cooked on the outside but with their juices locked in for added flavor. No longer will you need to visit your favorite steakhouse for such a succulent flavor. With an infrared grill, perfectly-grilled meals are no further away than is your own, comfortable back yard.
